Meet Our Staff
Jeff Carbone
Head Coach
Coach Jeff began swimming at the age of 4 and continued through high school while also playing other sports including baseball and basketball. In 2008 he joined the US Secret Service, eventually moving into a training position. In 2021 he transferred to a civilian position as a Safety Analyst for the Department of the Navy, but then in 2024 went back to Secret Service! He spent several years as a proud swim dad of three before he began coaching for SMDA in the fall of 2021. Coach Jeff loves encouraging young swimmers to work hard and reach their goals. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his family, camping, golfing, and watching hockey.
Erin Sellers
Assistant Coach
Coach Erin began swimming in 1994 at the age of 11 for the Indian Head Torpedoes and for Chesapeake Bay Aquatic Club. Her senior year of high school she started the high school swim team at Lackey HS where she still holds team records to this day. Coach Erin went on to swim at Mercyhurst College. Outside of swimming she played many other sports including softball and roller derby. She's been a massage therapist for 19 years and a substitute teacher who enjoys hiking, reading and spending time with her family.
Kate Rowe
Assistant Coach
Kate has been passionate about swimming from an early age, competing both scholastically and at the USA Club level. Her dedication and skill earned her a scholarship to attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she continued to excel in the sport. After college, she transitioned into public safety, working with the beach rescue safety divisions of both the Maryland and Florida fire departments. With over twelve years of coaching experience, Kate remains committed to developing athletes and sharing her love for the sport. She's looking forward to many more years of guiding swimmers toward success!
Matthew Trollinger
Coach
Coach Matt began swimming at age six with the Damascus Dolphins in the Montgomery County Swim League (MCSL) and competed year-round with clubs in Potomac Valley Swimming, including Joe Flaherty’s Dolphins, MAC, and RMSC. After a short break from the sport in his early teens, he returned to competitive swimming in high school and went on to swim and play water polo at Grove City College, lettering all four years in both sports and serving as captain of both teams his senior year. His primary events included the 100 and 200 Butterfly, 100 and 200 Freestyle, and 200 IM.
He began coaching in college as an Assistant Head Coach for the Quail Valley Marlins and worked with Swim America's learn-to-swim program. Over the years, he’s coached at multiple levels, including with YMCA swim programs, Health Unlimited Hurricanes as a Senior Level Coach, and prior to joining SMDA, with the Potomac Raiders and College of Southern Maryland between 2011 and 2018. Coach Matt is passionate about stroke development, building swimmer confidence, and helping young athletes reach their full potential.
Garrett Batchelor
Assistant Coach
Coach Garrett has been swimming since he was six, competing through High School in the 200 and 500 freestyle. Since 2020, he's shifted his focus to coaching where he aims to bring that same dedication to the next generation of swimmers. He's also into staying active outside the pool, whether it's hiking, playing lacrosse, or just enjoying racing. His goal as a coach is to help each kid discover their athletic potential and build confidence in their abilities. He's committed to creating a supportive environment where swimmers can grow and achieve their personal bests.

Jessica Carbone
Team Manager
Jess is our General Manager, Team Coordinator, and Communications guru. You can find her with her laptop on the pool deck and in the stands cheering for every Trident in the water.
Kelly Walter
Assistant Coach
Kelly is a lifelong swimmer and coaches both Summer Swim (Indian Head Torpedoes) and High School (Lackey) in addition to SMDA! She's a busy lady. She's a high school teacher and loves spending time with her family.
Marin Patterson
Assistant Coach
Marin started swimming at the age of 8 after playing different sports her whole childhood. She immediately loved it. She swam for Waves of Westlake and on North Point's varsity swim team all through high school. She started coaching for Waves of Westlake after graduating and then began coaching for SMDA in 2023. Outside of swimming, Marin is a dog groomer and pet sitter and loves animals. She loves spending time with her family, friends, and partner.
Erin White
Strength And Conditioning Coach
Erin White is our strength and conditioning coach! You can find Erin in the gym, on the trail, in the water, or on a bike. She's passionate about fitness and showing our athletes what it means to lead a strong and active lifestyle.
